Creating Your Own Little Free Library in Charlotte, NC

How To Make a Little Free Library

Calling all bookworms in Charlotte, NC! As a locally owned and operated franchise, we are dedicated to bettering the community we live and work in. That is why we wanted to share an easy way to spread knowledge. If your community is lacking a book exchange, creating a Little Free Library might just do the trick.

A Little Free Library is a neighborhood book exchange where anyone can take a book or leave one for someone else. Since the first one of its creation in 2009, there are now more than 100,000 libraries intended to inspire readers and connect communities.

Anyone can take on the job of starting a Little Free Library. You can build your own and register it or buy a kit or pre-built library from littlefreelibrary.org.

There are just five easy steps, courtesy of Little Free Library, to starting your own set-up near you:

  1. Find a Location & Steward

Decide on a good spot where you can legally and safely put the library into the ground. It is recommended to pick somewhere where there is a lot of foot traffic and is very visible to anyone passing by. Pick the steward who will be the caretaker. The steward promotes the library and keeps it clean and welcoming.

  1.  Get a Library

You are free to build your own Little Free Library however you desire. You can also find someone to build one for you or purchase one through the Little Free Library’s online store. If you decide to purchase one through the website, it will automatically be registered and come with a charter sign.

  1. Register Your Library

When you register, you now have access to many benefits such as a support network and an official charter sign printed with a unique charter number.

  1. Build Support

Your library will thrive if the surrounding community gets involved. Reach out to local sources such as newspapers and radio and TV stations, and draft a press release. Let your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers know in person or use social media to spread the word. Follow Little Free Library’s blog for more tips and resources to gain support.

  1. Add Your Library on the Map

Plan a Grand Opening Ceremony and invite the community to join! Go all out if you desire - have a ribbon-cutting, bring snacks, and of course, share books. Share photos on social media and join the Facebook group for LFL stewards.

Community endeavors like Little Free Libraries have successfully kept neighbors, families and friends connected. These are places where positive interactions are created, making people eager to keep coming back.
