Should You Really Be Using Commercial Drain Cleaner?

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Can I use a commercial drain cleaner in my home?

We can all agree that clogged drains are gross, and no one wants to shower standing in a tub full of dirty water. Often times a chemical drain cleaner seems like the easy way out of this gross situation, but that may not be the case. Whether the clog is from hair, soap scum, grease, or damaged pipes, drain cleaners are not the best choice. Commercial drain cleaners may dissolve the clog and they can also eat away at your pipes, even if they are PVC.

A Licensed plumber can tell you what type of pipes you have and if a commercial drain cleaner is the right choice for you. If you are trying to avoid a visit from your plumber we recommend an enzymatic cleaner. These cleaners were originally created for septic tanks. However, they can help with most clogs and are far less damaging, or not damaging at all to pipes. You can find these specialized enzymatic cleaners at your local hardware store, and even some grocery stores carry them.

If your clog persists after an enzymatic cleaner, we recommend a professional cleaning by a plumber before reaching for a commercial drain cleaner. A professional cleaning can help remove whatever is blocking the flow of water and is often far more effective than any store-bought drain cleaner. Opting for a plumber to clear the blockage also means it is less likely to recur as the entire blockage will be removed.

Sometimes you can’t clear the clog quickly enough and it results in an overflow. If you suffered from an overflow in your Charlotte, NC home you need to work with a restoration specialist like SERVPRO of South Mecklenburg County. When pipes are blocked and cause overflows, the water that enters your home is likely not clean and could even contain harmful bacteria and viruses. Attempting to clean up an overflow yourself could put you and your family at risk, our water restoration team knows how to properly mitigate the damage after an overflow so you can feel comfortable knowing that your home is safe.
