Are Chemical Drain Cleaners Wise to Use?

2/3/2022 (Permalink)

Chemical drain cleaner being used

Clogged drains are gross and chemical drain cleaners seem like the easy way out, but that may not be a wise decision. Whether the clog is from grease, hair, soap scum or damaged pipes, commercial drain cleaners may dissolve the clog but it can also eat away at your pipes, even if they are PVC. A licensed plumber can tell you what type of pipes you have and if a chemical drain cleaner is the right choice for you.

If you are trying to avoid a plumber we recommend an enzymatic cleaner. These cleaners were originally created for septic tanks, however, they can help with most clogs and are not damaging to pipes. You can easily find an enzymatic cleaner at hardware stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot. If your clog persists after trying an enzymatic cleaner we recommend a professional sewage cleaning.

If you had a clog that caused an overflow in your Charlotte, Pineville or Matthews, NC home or a burst pipe and it is already too late you likely need to work with a restoration specialist like SERVPRO of South Mecklenburg County. Whatever your situation it is important to know the possible dangers of commercial drain cleaners.
